What’s New for Spring 2014

The IT department has been actively upgrading and prepping several new services for the start of the spring semester. Below is a brief summary of services impacting the entire campus, as well as, new services available to students.


Podiums Updated – All IT supported podiums have been upgraded to Windows 8.1 and Office 2013. To help ease the transition to Windows 8.1 we have configured all podiums to boot directly to the desktop, as well as, additional settings to maximize efficiency when using a keyboard and mouse. If you need any assistance with the podium computers please call the classroom support hotline at x4963.


Computer Refresh Complete – All computers in IT supported computerized classrooms and public labs have been replaced with new 24” All-in-One computers complete with touch screens. These computers also run Windows 8.1 and Office 2013, they also have keyboards and mice allowing students to utilize either option.


Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 – All UCCS computers are eligible to be upgraded to Windows 8.1 and Office 2013. If you would like either upgrade please give us a call or shoot us an email and will be happy to help with the upgrade.


Office 365 for Students – As of Tuesday morning (1/21/14) all active UCCS Students will have access to several new services provided by Microsoft Office 365. Currently these features are only available to UCCS students, IT is actively researching solutions for faculty and staff. For more information please visit

  • Office Web Apps – free online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and One Note
  • SkyDrive – 25 Gigabytes of online storage, including document collaboration and sharing with other students
  • SharePoint – personal SharePoint websites, which allow students to build and share their sites with others


PawPrints Mobile – students can now print securely from mobile devices including laptops, tablets and smart phones directly to paw prints printers across campus. For more information please visit

New Processes to Improve Quality of UCCS Website Content

Having accurate and updated content is essential to everyone using the website. To ensure UCCS has current and accurate content published on the UCCS website, Web Services will be implementing several new processes in the coming weeks.

  • First, we will be sending a message to all UCCS web site owners verifying they are the appropriate site owner and their correct contact information is on file. The site owner is ultimately responsible for the content including text, images and documents published on their portion of the UCCS website. If you receive one of these reports please ensure we have the correct information for you or let us know who should be the content owner for the site.
  • Second, a report of all technical contacts for each site will be sent to the web site owner. The technical contact is the primary person responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the site.
  • Finally, ongoing maintenance of the site will include a message to owners each semester reminding them to verify the content is relevant and accurate. To assist owners in identifying any potentially stale content, the maintenance messages will also include pages that have not been updated for a significant period of time.


Web site owners and technical contacts must review and update their content regularly to maintain accuracy and relevance. Web Services recommends the following:

  • Review all content and contact information every semester
  • Check all site links regularly
  • Update or remove outdated pages and content
  • Contact Web Services if you have questions about maintaining your content

Email List Server Maintenance 4:00pm – 4:30pm Friday, 1/17/2014

We will be performing maintenance on the list email server from 4:00pm until 4:30pm today, 1/17/2014.

During this time email sent to the Faculty and Staff list and other email lists will be delayed, but will be delivered shortly after service is restored.

Server Maintenance Wednesday, 1/15/14 5:30 pm – Midnight

On Wednesday 1/15/14, we will be performing after hours server maintenance beginning at 5:30 pm and lasting until Midnight.  During this time several services will be unavailable while others may be slow to respond.  Please see the following list for more details:


  • Department Shares on Columbia – All Department Shares will be unavailable from 5:30 pm until Midnight, during this time you will not be able to access any files located in your Department Share.  If you need access to these files, please be sure to save a copy to your computer prior to 5:30 pm.
  • Posting messages to Faculty and Staff email lists – Beginning at 6:00 pm and lasting until 8:00 pm messages sent to email lists or posting to the Faculty and Staff email lists via will be unavailable.
  • Personal Shares on Enterprise and Excelsior – These servers will remain operational, however, performance will be degraded and you will see slow response times when trying to open or save files.
  • UCCS Websites – All websites will remain operational and accessible, however, they may respond slower when searching or loading pages with large amounts of data.


This evening (1/13/14) the IT department will be performing maintenance on the Pro and Webworks servers from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.   These servers handle the following services and websites:

  • IT Username Assistance page
  • e2campus Emergency Notification system – Registrations and account changes only.  The UCCS community will still receive text messages in the event of an emergency.
  • SSL websites with forms
  • Faculty and Staff Email list – You will not be able to send email to faculty-l or staff-l during this outage.
  • Institutional Research –
  • UCCS on iTunes U log in
  • Online payment system for UCCS parking tickets
  • Pawprints – Users will be able to print, but they will not be able to add money to their account.
  • Academic ethics code violation reporting site
  • Scholarly Report Database
  • Student Employment Assistance Network (SEAN’s Place)
  • Volunteer Information Network and Community Exchange (VINCE)

During this time the above  listed sites and services will be unavailable.  Please contact the Help Desk if you have any questions or concerns.

This Sunday (1/12/14) from 6:00 pm to Midnight we will be performing network maintenance and installing a backup Internet router.


We do not anticipate Internet being down for all 6 hours.  There will be outages lasting from 5-30 minutes as equipment is installed.


Service interruptions during this time:

  • On campus: you will be unable to access the Internet or any UCCS resources including but not limited to the UCCS Home Page, Blackboard, Student & Employee Portals and Office 365 (student,retiree) email
  • Wireless Network:  The UCCS-Wireless network will be unavailable from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
  • Off campus: you will be unable to VPN or access any UCCS Resources, including but not limited to the UCCS Home Page, Exchange (Faculty,Staff) Email, and Office 365 (Student) Email.

Access to Blackboard, Student & Employee Portals from off campus will be intermittently unavailable between 6:00 pm and Midnight.


If you are trying to access any UCCS IT resources during this time, and are unable to do so, please wait and try again after midnight.

Change to Faculty and Staff Email Lists

As of January 9th, the UCCS email addresses of faculty and staff will be automatically added to the and email lists.  Once an email address is created new faculty will be added to and new staff will be added to  These lists are the used for official communications.  To ensure that everyone is receiving these communications, we have added several hundred faculty and staff that had not previously requested to join the lists.

Update on New Lab Computers

The Information Technology (IT) department is in the process of refreshing all, approximately 700 computers and operating systems in each IT maintained computer labs on campus. Starting today, Monday January 6th, the El Pomar/Library lab will be closed until Thursday January 9th. During this time the computer lab in Columbine Hall room 231 will be open and available for use. Beginning Thursday January 9th all of the Columbine computer labs will be closed until Tuesday January 14th. During the Columbine Hall refresh period, the El Pomar/Library lab will be open and available with the new computers.

The new computers will be using Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 8.1. Please note the Windows 8.1 operating system has a new interface and utilizes touch screen technology. The new lab computers will support touch screen capabilities but a keyboard and mouse will also be supplied at each machine for user convenience. If you are using one of the new computers in the El Pomar/Library lab or Columbine Hall 231 lab and are unfamiliar with the new Windows 8.1 operating system, our helpful computer lab advisors will be available to assist with questions.

IT thanks you for your patience during the computer lab refresh period. Our team has worked hard to minimize downtime and we are excited to offer the new computer environment to users. We think you will be eager to try the new HP, All-in-One touch screen computers running Windows 8.1, Office 2013 and the same popular software titles from the Fall 2013 semester including Adobe Creative Suite 6.
