Faculty & Staff – New Campus Technology for 2013

This summer we have made several updates to the campus infrastructure, as well as, several new IT services.   Additionally, we will be extending support hours for the first 3 weeks of classes, the Help Desk is available M-T 7:30 am – 7:30 pm and F 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, if you need any assistance please feel free to contact us via email helpdesk@uccs.edu, phone 255-3536 or walk in, just look for the doors at the bottom of the clock tower.

 

Below is a brief summary of updates and new services on campus:

  • Campus Wireless Networkhas been upgraded.  Due to the importance of wireless to the campus we have upgraded over 350 Wireless Access Points (WAP) and added several additional access points to increase coverage across campus. 
  • Filelocker.uccs.edu (Faculty/Staff Only) – allows you to share files with other people both inside and outside of UCCS. It is a temporary and secure storage system for sharing files and data.  If you work with sensitive data, Filelocker is a must!
  • Don’t forget Podium Training – If you have not completed your podium training, there’s still time.  Please contact Randy Nozowa at rnozawa@uccs.edu to schedule a time.  A Podium key is required for use of smart classrooms!
  • Blackboard Upgrade – The FRC has been working around the clock to install new Blackboard features for the start of the semester.  For more info please visit the FRC’s website http://www.uccs.edu/frc
  • Windows 8 & Office 2013 – Although the labs will not be updated until Winter Break, you have access to both of these now.  Please contact us for more information.

 

Several new IT Services are available for students as well, including Paw Prints Mobile, and myClasses.uccs.edu a mobile class schedule.

  • Paw Prints Mobile – allows students to print to lab printers using their personal laptops and mobile devices.
  • myClasses.uccs.edu – is a secure mobile friendly class lookup.   myClasses.uccs.edu offers an easy, fast and convenient way to look up the location, time and professor of your next class

Welcome UCCS Students

Returning Students – We are offering several new services this year, including an upgraded wireless network.

  • myClasses.uccs.edu  – is a secure mobile friendly website designed to help you look up your class schedule from a mobile device such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone.  myClasses.uccs.edu offers an easy, fast and convenient way to look up the location, time and professor of your next class. All you need is a web browser on your mobile device and type myclasses.uccs.edu into the address bar. Login with your UCCS username and password, this makes it secure, and your class schedule will be displayed. Your class schedule will include all enrolled classes, as well as, any canceled or waitlisted classes. Bookmark the web address; remember it is your class schedule at myClasses.uccs.edu.

 

  • Upgrade of Campus Wireless NetworkThe UCCS Wireless network has quickly become one of the most important pieces of technology on campus.  There are more devices connected wirelessly than people on campus!  Due to the importance of wireless to the campus we have upgraded over 350 Wireless Access Points (WAP) and added several additional access points to increase coverage across campus.  For all you techies out there, the new network is 802.11ac compliant.  The new WAP’s are still being tweaked and tuned, if you experience weak signal strength please let us know!

 

  • Paw Prints Mobile (Coming Soon) will let students print securely from mobile devices including laptops, tablets and smart phones using your Paw Prints account. Documents can be submitted three different ways using your mobile device: Email, Mobile printing app for iPhone and Android, and web upload. To receive more information on this exciting new service, visit print.uccs.edu on your mobile device.  We are working on the final details but eager to offer this new and convenient printing service to UCCS students.

 

  • Upgrades to Office 365 & Student Email (Coming Soon)In mid-September student email will be upgraded to the latest version of Office 365.  Initially this means a new look and feel to Outlook.  The upgrade comes with several new features including Cloud Storage and Office Web Apps.  We hope to offer these features to students as quickly as possible. 

 

  • Extended Support HoursNeed help getting started?  We are extending our support hours for the start of the semester, beginning the first day of classes we are open from 7:30 am – 7:30 pm M-T, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm F.  Call us at 719-255-3536, email us at helpdesk@uccs.edu or stop by, just look for the doors at the bottom of the clock tower.  We are hoping this will benefit all students but especially night students. Additionally we have several self-help and instruction guides on our website; www.uccs.edu/helpdesk.  For students needing help with Blackboard there is a special 24/7 hot line 1-877-654-8309.

This evening 8/22/13, beginning at 7:00 pm and lasting until 12:00 am we will be performing maintenance on Enterprise and Excelsior, the servers that hold all Z: drives.  If you have files stored on your Z: drive and need access after 7:00  pm please be sure to copy those files to your local computer.

 

We apologize for the short notice, however, this maintenance is necessary for us to finish preparing these servers for the start of the semester.

This Sunday (8/18/13) get outside and enjoy the weather, because beginning at 8:00 AM and lasting until 5:00 PM, we will be performing maintenance to the campus network.  There will be brief 5 to 10 minute outages throughout the day as we install new equipment to help improve the reliability of the campus Internet connection.

 

During these brief outages, access to on campus servers such as VPN, Exchange email, student email and network drives from off campus will be unavailable.  Additionally, if you are on campus you may periodically lose  Internet access but will have access to all other campus servers.

 

PLEASE NOTE:  Blackboard and the myUCCS portals from off campus WILL BE available throughout the day and are not impacted by this maintenance.  

We are currently experiencing multiple issues with Blackboard.  Blackboard is currently unavailable and will be offline until 7:00 pm this evening, Wednesday, August 14.

 

Notification will be sent to the campus if service is restored prior to 7:00 pm.

As we continue to prepare for the start of the new school year, we will be performing additional sever maintenance tomorrow night (Tuesday, August 13).

 

Beginning at 7:00 pm and lasting until Midnight the following services will be unavailable:

 

  • Department Shares on Columbia will be unavailable.  If you need access to any documents or files stored on Columbia please be sure to retrieve a copy of them before 5:30 pm
  • Faculty and Staff Z: drives on Enterprise will be unavailable.  If you have files stored on your Z: drive and need access after 5:30 pm please be sure to copy those files to your local computer.
  • Student Z: drives on Excelsior will be unavailable.  If you have files stored on your Z: drive and need access after 5:30 pm please be sure to copy those files to your local computer. 
  • Pawprints  Users will be able to print, but they will not be able to add money to their account.
  • OneCard All systems will go into offline mode. 

 

Please be sure to save all of your work before you leave for the evening.

 

 

 

This Sunday (8/4/13) from 6:00 am to midnight, there will be multiple campus systems unavailable for maintenance.  In preparation for the start of the fall semester, both UCCS IT and University Information Systems (UIS) will be performing maintenance on several  key systems utilized by the campus.  Below is a brief summary of the maintenance schedule, please email us if you would like any additional information.

 

All Portals Unavailable  6:00 am – midnight

  • UIS will be performing maintenance for all CU campuses.  Changes are being made to help improve overall portal performance. 
  • This includes, all my.uccs.edu including the student, faculty and employee portals, as well as most systems accessed from within these portals. 

 

All Campus IT Services will be Unavailable 8:00 am – noon

  • This will impact all campus systems including email, VPN, Blackboard, on-campus Internet access, Z: drives on Enterprise and Excelsior, department shares on Columbia and all other computer based systems.
  • Beginning at 8:00 am the campus network will be taken offline to install new equipment.

 

Blackboard and on-campus Internet access will be restored by noon

  • Email, VPN and all other campus services will remain offline. 

 

All campus IT Services will be intermittently unavailable from  noon – midnight

  • At 12:00 pm we will begin bringing the remaining services back online.  This will take several hours and we do not anticipate full restoration of services to be completed until midnight.
