Protect Your UCCS Email Account

Posted on July 30th, 2013 by Help Desk

Recently there has been a significant increase in the amount of spam and phishing attempts targeted at UCCS students email accounts.  Unfortunately, far too many students are responding to these emails or clicking on links within the emails.  Once you click on one of these links or respond to one of these emails, you have compromised your account and potentially all of your personal information.

You can do your part in reducing these emails by following these simple guidelines:

  • UCCS will never ask you for your username and password via email.  Email subjects such as Re-Validate Your Email or Re-Validate Your Account are always phishing attempts
  • You never have to validate your email by clicking on a link or providing your username and password
  • Ignore over quota messages, you have 25 GB’s of email space and will not run out
  • If an email asks you for your password or directs you to a webpage asking for your password ignore the email

If you have responded to any email or provided your username and password by clicking on a link within one of these emails, please contact us immediately.  We will work with you to mitigate damage to your account and get you back up and running.  Additionally all emails sent from the UCCS IT department will be sent from can be verified by visiting

What’s the IT Department up to this Summer?

Posted on July 12th, 2013 by Help Desk

We are actively working on multiple projects within IT and we wanted to take a minute to update the campus.  Some of these projects have greater impact than others, but chances are at least one of these projects will impact you.  This Summer we are upgrading the Wireless Network across the entire campus as well as implementing a New UCCS Search Page.  Other projects such as upgrading computer labs to Windows 8 and Office 2013 have been delayed to coincide with the Upgrade of Campus Computer Labs over the Winter Break.

Below is a brief summary of each of these projects including why we are doing the project, the benefits to the campus and a more detailed timeframe.  If you are interested in any of these projects please continue reading.  This is certainly not an exhaustive list of projects and more IT project announcements will be sent out over the summer. If there are other projects you would like to be updated on please let us know.

Wireless Network Upgrade

The UCCS Wireless network has quickly become one of the most important pieces of technology on campus.  There are more devices connected wirelessly than people on campus!  Due to the importance of wireless to the campus we will be making significant upgrades before the start of the semester.  We will be replacing over 350 Wireless Access Points (WAP) and adding additional access points to increase coverage.

  • Better signal strength, increase coverage within buildings, ability to handle more connections.
  • Update UCCS to the latest in wireless technology (802.11ac for all the techies reading this) that is utilized by new mobile devices and laptops.
  • Additionally, we will be reclassifying the wireless network from a “convenience” network to a “preferred” network.  This means it is still not as a reliable as plugging your device into a physical cable, but it is close.

  • Upgrades will begin on Monday, July 15th and will be completed by Friday, August 9thWireless will be unavailable on Monday, July 15th from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm.
  • As wireless is upgraded there will be brief 5-10 minute outages as hardware is replaced.  We will send notifications daily as to what buildings might be impacted that day.
  • Once the initial upgrade is complete, we will begin work assessing the feasibility of providing outdoor wireless in several key areas across the campus.

New UCCS Search Page

  • One of the most commonly requested changes to the UCCS website has been the search page and the formatting of the results.  A committee of several members from across campus have worked to help refresh the look and feel of the UCCS search page.

  • The new search page is mobile friendly.
  • Much easier to find results.
  • Leverages the latest in search engine technology provided by Google.

  • A beta version of the new search page is available now.  Give it a shot by clicking on the “Try the new Beta version of the UCCS search page” link located at the top of the current search results page or by clicking on the  following link:
  • The new search page will go live and be integrated into the all UCCS websites the week of July 22nd.

Windows 8 and Office 2013

  • Keeping UCCS current on technology is very important.  Typically we upgrade to the latest software as quickly as possible.  Windows 8 and Office 2013 offer some great advances in technology, however, it is also a fundamental change to how we have used Windows for the past several decades.  We received excellent feedback from the campus regarding these upgrades, opinion was almost split in half on upgrading.

  • Keeps UCCS on current technology.
  • Allows UCCS to leverage new Cloud features for UCCS students to store files and collaborate on documents.
  • Leverages touch screen technology.

  • Based on multiple factors including campus feedback, we will be upgrading to Windows 8 and Office 2013 in conjunction with new campus lab computers over the Winter break.
  • Why the delay?  We want to give the campus more time to become familiar with Windows 8 and Office 2013. Additionally, we have run into some compatibility issues, specifically with the Student Portal and Assistive Technology Software.  This delay will give software developers time to become compatible with Windows 8 and Office 2013.
  • Test Systems, Windows 8 and Office 2013 trainings will be provided during the Fall semester.
  • Windows 8 and Office 2013 will be deployed across all campus computer labs for the start of the Spring 2013 semester.

Upgrade of Campus Lab Computers

  • Typically the labs are upgraded every 3 years.  As most of you know we deferred this for a year due to the major changes in Windows 8 and the movement towards touch interfaces.

  • Ensures UCCS students have access to modern and reliable technology.
  • Redistribution of current computers to the rest of the UCCS campus.

  • We are actively reviewing and evaluating new computers for the labs.
  • New computers will be selected and ordered during the Fall semester.
  • Installation will take place over the Winter break.
  • All new computers will be in use for the Spring 2013 semester.
