This evening (2/25/13) from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm we will be performing maintenance on our campus list server, this will directly impact your ability to send email to all UCCS email addresses ending in “–l”.  Normal email flow will not be interrupted during this time.

 

Service interruptions during maintenance:

  • Faculty and Staff:  You will be unable to access the website https://fslist.uccs.edu/  for sending to Faculty and Staff email lists.  You will also be unable to send to any “-l” list being used by faculty, staff, groups, or organizations via campus email.

 

Service to the list server and website will be restored by 6:00 pm.

Update Your iPhone/iPad

Apple has released another update that needs to be installed on all iPhones & iPads.  This update fixes a calendar bug that drains the battery life of your device and puts an unusual amount of strain on our servers, this resulted in a brief email outage Friday morning.

Please perform this update ASAP, the update is very easy and takes about 10 minutes to complete.  You will NOT lose any settings, apps or information, below are the steps to perform the update.

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Software Update
  4. Tap Download and install

RESOLVED: Email Delivery Issues to Smartphones 2/22/13 8:30 am

RESOLVED As of 8:50 am.  Email should be fully restored and delivery of mail to mobile devices and smartphones has returned to normal.  If you are still experiencing issues please call us at 719-255-3536.

 

We are currently experiencing issues with email delivery to all mobile devices and smartphones.  We are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.  For immeidate access please use the Exchangemail from your web browser, the address is:  https://exchange.uccs.edu

This Sunday (2/17/13) from 8:00 am to 11:00 am we will be performing network maintenance.  This requires that we take down the Internet connection for all of UCCS, we are doing this in order to add network resources to help handle the attack we are still addressing.

 

Service interruptions during this time:

  • On campus: you will be unable to access the Internet or any UCCS resources including but not limited to the UCCS Home Page, Blackboard, Student & Employee Portals and Email.
  • Off campus: you will be unable to VPN or access any UCCS Resources, including but not limited to the UCCS Home Page, Blackboard, Student & Employee Portals and Email.

 

We do not anticipate Internet being down for all 3 hours, estimated downtime should be around 1 hour between 8:00 am and 11:00 am.  If you are trying to access any UCCS IT resources during this time, and are unable to do so, please wait and try again after 11:00 am.

 

Access will be fully restored before the Library opens at 11:00 am.

Update on Attack Against UCCS Network

We wanted pass along a brief update regarding the attack against the campus network.   Our network is still being attacked in the same manner we mentioned yesterday, however, we have successfully mitigated the attack and it is currently being blocked before it can impact the campus.  Although all of our systems are functioning normally, we are not completely out of the woods.  We are continuing to analyze the attack and prepare our “cyber defenses” in case the attack changes.  In the event we see a change in the attack, there may be a temporary loss of connection to campus systems.  We will restore service as quickly as possible. 

 

Many people have asked, why UCCS and who is doing this?  Honestly, we do not know the answers to these questions, finding these answers is extremely difficult.  Our attention is focused on keeping UCCS up and running and preparing for possible changes in the pattern of attack.

 

 

As of 3:30 pm

We have continued to make progress and most systems are functioning close to normal.  Classes and day to day work should be able to function through the remainder of the day.  Given this status we will NOT be performing maintenance from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm today and all IT systems should remain available.

We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day and this evening.  This will be our last update of the day, unless the current status changes.  If you experience any issues accessing UCCS IT resources please email us at helpdesk@uccs.edu.

As of 1:30 pm

We are still being attacked, however, we have been able to make some progress with connections on campus slowly returning, off campus access to UCCS resources may still be slow or altogether unavailable .  We strongly recommend you constantly save all work, especially when using a web browser application such as Blackboard or the my.uccs.edu portals.

If connections are still slow and unreliable by 4:00 pm today, we may have an extended outage from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm today to allow us to add resources to our network.  This outage will impact all UCCS resources.  It is too early to tell if we will need to take systems offline, however, we want to warn the campus of the possibility.  We will have more on this around 3:30 pm today.

Thank you for your patience, we are using all of our resources to keep the campus up and running and restoring service as quickly as possible.

As of 11:00 am

At 4:15 pm yesterday (2/12/13), UCCS was attacked and is still currently being attacked by what is called a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack.  This type of attack is meant to overload a specific target with an overwhelming amount of Internet traffic, which is what we are currently experiencing.  Think of this as rush hour on a busy highway, there are simply too many cars for the highway to handle. This type of attack does NOT target UCCS data or information, it is merely trying to shut down are ability to communicate via the Internet.  These types of attacks have brought down the ability of large government agencies and businesses, including banks, to communicate over the Internet.

 

We have been actively working to block the attack and add additional resources to minimize the impact.  We do anticipate slowness and periods of downtime throughout the day including but not limited to the following services:

  • www.uccs.edu home page
  • my.uccs.edu student and employee portals
  • Email access for both students and employees
  • Blackboard
  • Internet access on campus
  • VPN access into UCCS

Additionally, we are closely working with the other CU campuses for assistance in mitigating the attack.

UPDATED: 9:00 am 2/13/13 Intermittent Network Outages

UPDATE:  9:00 am

  • As of  9:00 am  we are still experiencing slowness.  As we work to resolve the issue, we anticipate brief 5 – 10 minutes when all systems will be unavailable and you may lose existing connections.  Please be sure to save your work often.  Our next update will be shortly after 10:00 am.

UPDATE:  8:00 am

  • We are still experiencing slowness when accessing UCCS Resources.  We are actively working to address the issues.  Please expect web pages and systems to respond 3o to 60 seconds slower than normal.

UPDATE: As of 1:00 am

  • Systems are being brought back online and becoming available. We are continuing to monitor the systems.

We are currently experiencing intermittent network outages impacting access to All UCCS IT Resources from both on and off campus.

Outages began at 4:15 pm this evening have continued on and off as of 9:30 pm. Our system administrators have been actively monitoring and restoring service as quickly as possible, however, you may experience issues accessing most systems.

Systems impacted include but are not limited to the following:

  • www.uccs.edu home page
  • my.uccs.edu student and employee portals
  • Email access for both students and employees
  • Blackboard
  • Internet access on campus
  • VPN access into UCCS

As the status of these systems change, we will post updates on this website.

The my.uccs.edu student & employee portals will be unavailable for scheduled maintenance beginning Sunday, February 10 at 4:00 pm and lasting until Monday, February 11 at 1:00 am.

When trying to access these pages you will receive a “site down for maintenance  notice.  If you need to access these sites on Sunday please be sure to do so before 4:00 pm.

When trying to access courses within Blackboard you may receive a “Could Not Initialize Class” error.

This error is the result of a recent upgrade to a piece of software called Java, that is installed on most computers.

To fix this error you must clear the cache of your web browser or use a different web browser if you do not wish to clear your cache.  Be sure to close out of Blackboard before starting this process.

9:20 am 2/1/13

Service is in the process of being restored by Microsoft.  You may be able to access your student email, however, pages may be slow to load and there will be a delay in email delivery.

We will continue to update this post as the status changes.

 

8:15 am 2/1/13

Student email is currently down.  We are aware of the issue, however, this is outage is impacting all of Microsoft’s Office 365 customers and is not just impacting UCCS.  We will continue to provide updates via this website as we receive them from Microsoft.  At this time there has been no estimated recovery time provided by Microsoft.

Please Note:  This outage does not impact Faculty and Staff email.
