RESOLVED: Campus Wide Network Outage 10/29/12 7:30 am

We are currently experiencing a campus wide network outage. As of 7:30 am access to Blackboard Email, Z: drives and all other UCCS resources are unavailable both on and off campus.

On campus logon’s will be very slow during this outage.

We are actively working to resolve the issue. At this time we do not have an ETA on when service will be restored.

Windows 8 – General Information and IT Recommendations

This Thursday the 25th, Microsoft will be unveiling Windows 8.  The IT Department has spent the last 2 months testing Windows 8 and developing a recommendation/roadmap for the University.  Windows 8 is a major change from the traditional interface we have all become accustomed to over the last several decades, Microsoft has shifted their focus to touch screens and mobile devices.  In order to answer questions and provide guidance on Windows 8 we have created this webpage.   For the first time Microsoft will be selling their own tablets called Surface, This page will provide you with information on Surface including considerations before buying the current version of Surface.

Below are our current recommendations to the campus, please visit our Windows 8 website for more detailed information:

Staff Computers

Windows 8 is not recommended and will not be offered at this time.  We are working with IT support staff in specific departments to test compatibility with existing systems.

Faculty Computers

Windows 8 is not recommended for your primary machine, however it is available for testing and development, we do recommend using a secondary machine or test machine.  Test installations are available today, this page provides information on obtaining Windows 8.    Don’t have a spare system?  We also have Windows 8 laptops and desktops available for checkout, just give us a call to reserve one.

Computer Labs

All IT computer labs on campus will remain on Windows 7 for the Spring 2013 semester.  During the semester a select Windows 8 pod will be setup in the library.  We will look at upgrading to Windows 8 for the Summer 2013 or Fall 2013 semester.

Campus Network

Windows 8 devices will be able to connect to the campus wireless, VPN and email servers.  Our Windows 8 page has more details.

 

Windows 8 is a compelling new operating system, however, the campus and CU systems are just not fully compatible with it yet.  If you have any questions please give us a call or reply to this email.

 

-The IT Department is aware of the brief power outage around 11:00 am this morning. We have verified that all of our servers and networks are up and operational. If you experience any computer related issues please call us right away 719-255-3536.

Today, October 10th, between 12:40 pm and 1:00 pm we experienced several unplanned system outages. Below is a summary of the services impacted during this time frame. As of 1:00 pm all services have returned to normal.

 

  • Blackboard – Was unavailable for approximately 10 minutes beginning at 12:40 pm and was very slow in responding for an additional 10 minutes. We are actively working with Blackboard to determine the cause of this outage.

 

  • VPN (Off Campus Access) – Was unavailable for approximately 10 minutes. This outage was unplanned and the result of an unexpected server update.

 

  • Faculty and Staff Email – Exchange email was unavailable for approximately 20 minutes. This outage was unplanned and the result of an unexpected server update. This outage only impacted faculty and staff email. Student email was not impacted.

 

We apologize for the interruption these outages caused and are actively working to prevent further outages during normal university hours. If you are still unable to access any of these systems please give us a call.

 

RESOLVED: Blackboard – Slow Page Loads – 10/10/12 12:45 PM

Blackboard is currently experiencing slow response times when loading pages and during log on.

We are aware of the issue and are currently working with Blackboard to resolve this as quickly as possible.

Network Maintenance – Sunday, October 7th 8:00 am – 11:00 am

Dear UCCS Students, Faculty and Staff,

This Sunday, October 7th between 8:00 am and 11:00 am, we will be performing network maintenance across campus.  Most network and campus resources should remaining up during this window, however,  there may be brief 5 – 10 minute windows where both the computer network and phones may be unavailable.  If you plan on using campus resources during this time please be sure to save your work often.

The network maintenance will be completed before the library and other campus resources open at 11:00 am.
